Sunrise/Burroughs Mountain Trail
At 6,400 ft., Sunrise is the highest point visitors can reach in the park by vehicle, providing spectacular views of Sourdough Ridge, Mt. Rainier, glaciers and subalpine meadows. The Burroughs Mountain trail (named for naturalist and essayist John Burroughs) offers the most accessible tundra in the Cascade Range.
Be Prepared:
- Check current trail conditions before starting. Early season hiking on this trail may be hazardous due to steep snow-covered slopes.
- Bring essentials for your comfort, such as hiking shoes/sneakers, bottled water, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc.
- Trail contains many loose rocks, so please watch your step.
- Stay on trail as plants in this area are extremely delicate and slow growing
What to Expect:
- Trail is 7 miles long, round-trip, with a 900 ft. elevation gain.
- Impressive vistas of Sourdough Ridge at various lookout points.
- Subalpine meadows with spiky clusters of fir and whitebark pine.
- Trail passes Frozen Lake, Sunrise's main water supply, before slowly climbing through notable tundra area.
- Top of trail provides a flat plateau with a breath-taking view of Mt. Rainier and Emmons Glacier, the largest glacier in the continental U.S.
