Reflection Lake

Though Mt. Rainier National Park possesses numerous lakes, the most popular (and photographed) is Reflection Lake. Located south of Paradise Valley, the lake was created over 5,000 years ago when an avalanche swept through the area, creating a dam that filled the lake. A beautiful reflection of Mt. Rainier can be seen on the lake's surface, especially when the wind is scarce and the water is still.

Be Prepared:
  • Be careful of traffic when walking along the roadside.

  • If walking down to the lake, be sure to stay on the trails.

What to Expect:
  • A large parking area available along the roadside.

  • Best views of the lake can be seen on clear, still mornings at the east end of the turnout.

  • During wildflower season, rosy spirea, red heather and Sitka valerian can be seen at the lake's edge. Across the road, look for avalanche lilies, paintbrush, shootingstars and elephanthead.
