When it was first discovered in 1871, it was originally named Mount Kaufmann after Konstantin Kaufman who was the first Governor-General of Russian Turkestan. In 1928 the peak was renamed Lenin Peak in honor of Vladimir Ilich Lenin, the founder of Russian Communism. Since July 2006 the peak has been officially called Ibn Sina Peak, after Abu Ali ibn Sina .
