Brief Historical Background:

  The word "Aktru" means "the white pasture" in the Altay language. Aktru mountain is located in the south of Siberia and is one of the highest peaks in the Northern Chuisky Range of the Altai mountain system (the highest summit is Maashey-Bashi peak, 4173 m). The name "Altai" comes from the Mongolian word "Altan", which means "Golden Mountains." Altai mountain area that still maintains its ecological integrity and primeval wilderness, is considered a sacred place and attracts various religious groups from all parts of Russia. Many local people are followers of exotic doctrines, for instance, pagans (Shamanists), followers of Roerikh and Old Believers.

Technical difficulty:

  The mountain slopes are covered with ice and snow during the whole year. The ascent involves technical climbing of the third category of difficulty. Minimal experience and good physical form in mountaineering is required. The total time of the ascent is from 10 to 15 hours depending on the weather. The last span to the peak takes about 1.5 hours and mountaineering equipment is needed.
