Temple at Palenque

Palenque

Pronounced: Pa Len' Kay

The Mayan site of Palenque is located in Chiapas, Mexico, where it is surrounded by the jungle. This site was occupied during the Late Classic Period (A.D.600-900) and was a ceremonial center and home to a number of Mayan Lords. There are religous temples, plazas, open courts and a ball court, but majority of the structures are palaces. Artifacts discovered at this site tell us about the Mayan Lords, in particular, Lord Pacal. His numerous burial offerings unearthered have made him one of the most well-known Lords of the Mayan civilization.
