In August 1986 a group of dedicated citizens interested in preserving Malverne's history assembled at an ad hoc meeting. On January 21, 1987, the Malverne Historical & Preservation Society received its charter. The society held meetings at the Malverne Public Library. Each meeting featured a guest speaker who spoke on a history-related topic. The society gathered Malverne memorabilia which they originally stored in the home of Dr. Keith Rossein, founder and first president. Later they held meetings at Malverne Village Hall and then-Mayor Joseph Hennessy gave the society space at Village Hall to store items.
In 1995, the society bought the house at 369 Ocean Avenue, thanks to the generosity of benefactress Jeanne Landers. Volunteers worked long hours restoring the house. The Grand Opening Ceremony of the Joseph L. Landers Memorial Restoration House took place on June 3, 1996. Today, society meetings and events are held there.
