Chevaux de Frise: A defensive obstacle consisting of upright logs tipped with iron points. The term itself is French for "Frisian Horse". The Frisians were a Germanic people who, possessing little calvary, relied heavily on anti-cavalry obstacles.

Hudson Highlands: The mountains on both sides of the Hudson River in New York State, between Newburgh Bay and Haverstraw Bay. They form the northern region of the New York-New Jersey Highlands. The Hudson river becomes narrower and deeper through this area, reaching its deepest point of 216 ft. near Garrison.

Polly Pell: Legend describing a young woman named Polly Pell who, while riding across the frozen Hudson River on a sleigh with a man she was intended to marry, was rescued when the ice broke and brought to the island's shore by her lover, whom she promptly married. The island was thereafter called "Pollepel".
