Mountain climbing is one of the most exciting outdoor sports that is all about challenge and perseverance, about putting hands and feet onto rocks and ice and snow and finally reaching a summit. It tests human ingenuity and survival abilities against the rugged terrain, constantly changing weather, and rarefied air of the world's highest peaks.
The possibilities are limitless and the rewards are infinite. Mountain climbing allows people to see beautiful places and teaches them priceless lessons about courage, aspiration, and fear. It is a sport with a lot of complexity, a grand, time-honored pursuit that gives them the opportunity to never stop exploring.
"To see the sun rise before it does. To understand fellow climbers in an accelerated environment. An alternative to the day-to-day world. To see if you can do it. To spend time with yourself and see if you are really whom you think you are. To discover your limits." (Alan Arnette)
When this age-old question was first publicly asked in the 1920s of George Mallory during his attempt on Everest, his seemingly dismissive but actually incredibly complex answer was: "Because it is there."
