For the past seven years, the annual Connections Conference has provided Library and Information Science doctoral students a venue for the presentation of their research to fellow student colleagues from the U.S. and Canada.

Keeping with past tradition, Connections 8 is soliciting papers that reflect the diverse interests of students of LIS and related fields. The primary purpose of the conference is to provide an atmosphere that is friendly and non-threatening for the dissemination of current doctoral research.

Possible topics may include abstracting and indexing, archival theory and practice; history of publishing, authorship, and reading; information management; information needs and user studies; information policy; information retrieval; information systems; Internet and multimedia; knowledge organizations; management of information organizations; media and communications studies; and museum studies.

Since 1995, Library and Information Science doctoral students have gathered at the annual Connections Conference to present their research. The Connections Conference is an important and much needed venue for the dissemination of Library and Information Science doctoral research. It is also a friendly and non-threatening forum in which doctoral students at all levels can actively participate. Connections 8: Quest for Knowledge continues the commitment to these principles. Long Island University C.W. Post Campus / Palmer School of Library and Information Science, Brookville, NY will host this year's conference on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday June 6, 7, and 8, 2003. The registration fee is $40USD.

Currently enrolled doctoral students in all areas of library and information science or related fields are invited to submit abstracts to Connections 8: Quest for Knowledge. Proposals are not limited to a specific theme. Connections 8 reflects the wide-ranging and diverse interests of its participants. Reports of doctoral research at any stage of completion are welcome, from the initial conceptualization of theories and methods to summary research findings. Students in the early stages of their doctoral programs are especially encouraged to submit abstracts, as Connections 8 is an ideal venue for the friendly exchange of ideas among peers. Abstracts accepted for presentation will be posted at the Connections 8 Web site and will also be published in a forthcoming issue of the Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science. All abstract submissions are subject to blind review conducted by faculty members and doctoral candidates at the Palmer School of Library and Information Science. Research presentations at Connections 8 are limited to 15 minutes, in addition to a 5-minute question and answer period.

Submissions must include:

  • Abstract only, with title (300 words maximum)
  • Name of author
  • Contact information: email, phone, fax, and web address
  • Short biography (25-50 words)

Deadline for Submissions:

  • The deadline for submissions is February 1, 2003.
  • Notification of acceptance will occur by March 1, 2003.
  • Rolling acceptance letters will be sent out to submitting students. The earlier you submit your abstract, the earlier you will receive notification of acceptance.

The 2003 conference is being hosted by The Palmer School of Library and Information science, which is located on the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University in Brookville, NY. The conference will run from June 6-8, 2003. The Palmer School is proud to join past U.S. hosts of this Canadian conference, the University of Michigan and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Conference sessions will be held on campus at the Palmer School of Library and Information Science and Humanities Hall.

Connections Conference 8: Quest for Knowledge will be held at the Palmer School of Library and Information Science, on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, NY from Friday to Sunday, June 6-8, 2003. A reception will be held on June 6th, with all doctoral research presentations being conducted on June 7th and 8th. We will begin reviewing abstracts submitted for presentation beginning September 5, 2002 until February 1, 2003. Presenters will have up to 15 minutes to present their research, followed by a 5-minute question and answer period. A full schedule for the conference, including keynote speakers, presenters and topics, will appear on this site approximately six weeks before the conference is scheduled to start. Please check back!

The fee for the conference is $40USD for all doctoral students. This fee includes the Friday evening reception, continental breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, lunch on Saturday and Sunday and the banquet dinner on Saturday evening. Also included are all refreshment breaks throughout the conference weekend.

To register: Please complete the Doctoral Registration Form. Please attach and mail the registration form with your check for $40 USD. If you prefer to pay with a credit card, fax the Doctoral Registration Form and the Credit Card Form to Mary Ann Caden 516-299-4168.

Conference Fees and Registration Process - MLS Students Return to Top

The Connections Conference provides a forum for doctoral students to present their research at various stages of development. Although MLS students will not be presenting, they are welcome to register as attendees. The unsubsidized fee for the conference for MLS students interested in attending is $100USD. This fee includes the Friday evening reception, continental breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, lunch on Saturday and Sunday and the banquet dinner on Saturday evening. Also included are all refreshment breaks throughout the conference weekend. Long Island University will sponsor up to 20 currently enrolled Palmer School MLS students as conference attendees. If you are among the first 20 Palmer MLS students to register, your registration fee will be $40USD.

To register: Please complete the Master Student Form. Please attach and mail the registration form with your check for $40 USD. If you prefer to pay with a credit card, fax the Doctoral Registration Form and the Credit Card Form to Mary Ann Caden 516-299-4168.

An opening conference reception will be held on Friday June 6th in the Great Hall from 7-8:30pm. A banquet dinner will be held on Saturday evening, June 7th at the Top of the Commons.

The Palmer School of Long Island University has student housing available for the conference at $50 for a single - per night and $60 for a double - per night. These rates include linen service. If you are interested in on campus housing, please complete the University Housing Form

The Palmer School of Long Island University has arranged for accommodations for a group of rooms at the East Norwich Inn, just a few miles from the University. The rate for a single is $92 per night; the rate for a double is $99 per night (2 people per room). Extra charge of $15 for an additional person. Cancellation policy 24 hours in advance. You must reserve this room by May 6, 2003, to obtain this group rate. Check in time is 3pm and check out time is 12 noon.

The C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University is located on 307.9 beautiful acres in Brookville NY, on the north shore of Long Island. The campus is set in the idyllic neighborhood known as the "Gold Coast," an historic suburban community that has been the subject of popular novels and major motion pictures.
